In short

Shopify announced its Fall '26 Edition on 28 October 2026. The company says the release lets any AI agent or app work with Shopify's catalog, cart and checkout, and that storefronts are ready for browser agents by default. IT Brief reported that the Sidekick assistant and the Shopify Protect fraud tools were also expanded.

Shopify announced its Fall '26 Edition, named "Exponential", on 28 October 2026. In its post for developers, the company says the release lets any AI agent or app work directly with Shopify's catalog, cart and checkout. IT Brief noted that this is Shopify's tenth product showcase.

  • Shop.dev gives agents and apps one connection to the catalog, sign-in with Shop, cart, checkout and Shop Pay; the same connection powers shop.md, a skill that turns agents into shopping assistants. Shopify says no key is needed to start building.
  • With WebMCP tools on Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts, browser agents can look up products, change the cart and, once the buyer agrees, finish checkout.
  • IT Brief says Sidekick has learned to do calculations, write code, look things up online and keep track of what merchants tell it, but changes still need the merchant's approval.
  • Shopify Protect now has a rule builder for merchants to create and try out custom fraud rules, and one Shopify CLI command checks apps for common security weaknesses.

Why it matters

Shopify says every store is ready for browser agents by default. IT Brief reports that shop.md lets shoppers search for products and pay with Shop Pay through agents such as ChatGPT and Claude, which could make accurate product data more important. For Turkish brands selling abroad on Shopify, keeping product descriptions, stock and price data complete may help agents present their products correctly. According to Shopify, merchants can now also see how long a partner sending a collaborator request has been on Shopify and where its account was registered, which could add a check before granting store access. Some of the payment updates reported by IT Brief, such as Shop Pay Instalments, are aimed at merchants in Australia.
