In short

On October 29, 2026, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Copilot for finance for finance teams. The update includes more than 25 new finance skills and partner plugins in total, among them account reconciliation, journal entry preparation and performance reporting skills and Dynamics 365, QuickBooks and Xero plugins. No pricing was shared.

Brian Jones, corporate vice president of the Excel product group, announced Microsoft Copilot for finance on the Microsoft Copilot blog on October 29, 2026. According to Microsoft, the update extends the finance skills added to Copilot in Excel in June 2026 and brings more than 25 new skills and partner plugins in total for accounting, capital markets and broader finance work. Finance staff can now work directly in the Copilot app instead of starting in Excel.

  • Accounting skills cover account reconciliation and discrepancy detection, journal entry preparation with accruals, reclassifications and reversals, and performance reporting against plan. For now these skills are offered through Frontier for Copilot in Excel and Cowork.
  • Users can choose to start an audit trail, which records in their chat history what Copilot changed and why. Copilot can also reverse individual edits without disturbing the rest of the workbook.
  • The Capital Markets and Finance plugins for Cowork are generally available; the Dynamics 365 ERP plugin and partner plugins such as Intuit QuickBooks, Xero, Zoho Books, Moody's and S&P Global are rolling out.
  • Microsoft says that in the first seven days of limited Insider availability, more than 8,000 users invoked the accounting skills more than 44,000 times across more than 18,000 Copilot conversations.

Why it matters

For finance teams that run month-end close, reconciliation and reporting in Excel, skills that work directly inside the spreadsheet could reduce repetitive work. However, the plugin list Microsoft published does not include the local ERP and accounting software common in Türkiye, and it gives no information on local accounting rules. Microsoft notes that partner services can come with their own licensing, subscription or admin enablement requirements, and no pricing was shared. Before a pilot, it may help to settle which system the data comes from, who can access which file and how the audit trail will be kept.
