According to preliminary IDC data, PC shipments fell 20.1% in the third quarter of 2026, and prices are expected to stay above year-ago levels.
In preliminary data released on 8 October 2026, research firm IDC said global PC shipments fell 20.1% year over year to 62.7 million units in the third quarter. IDC expects prices to remain well above year-ago levels.
Research firm IDC said in preliminary data released on 8 October 2026 that global PC shipments fell to 62.7 million units in the third quarter of 2026. That is a 20.1% drop from 78.5 million units a year earlier and 9.1% lower than the previous quarter. IDC noted that the third quarter is usually higher than the second, a pattern that broke this year.
- According to IDC, vendors and channels stocked up early in the year ahead of price hikes, and the channel spent the third quarter working through that inventory.
- Supply constraints, memory-driven price hikes and higher prices linked to the AI data center build-out also weighed on shipments.
- Lenovo fell 22.6% to 14.9 million units, HP fell 30.9% to 10.3 million and Dell fell 25% to 7.6 million.
- Apple fell 11.3% to 5.9 million units and ASUS fell 8.6% to 5.5 million.
Why it matters
IDC research director Jitesh Ubrani said channels now fear being stuck with excess stock while high prices are holding back demand. According to IDC, this could bring some promotions in the near term, but prices are expected to stay well above year-ago levels. For companies in Türkiye planning to refresh their PC fleet, watching promotion periods and splitting purchases by priority can help protect the budget. IDC also warned that a weaker economy could reduce demand further into 2027.
- Global shipments fell 20.1% to 62.7 million units.
- The main causes were early stockpiling, supply constraints and high prices.
- IDC expects prices to stay above year-ago levels.
