Google Meet starts encrypting calls with post-quantum cryptography
Google has started using post-quantum cryptography to encrypt Google Meet calls, beginning with laptop web clients and meeting room hardware.
On 12 October 2026 Google announced on its Workspace Updates blog that Google Meet calls are now encrypted with post-quantum cryptography. The rollout started with web clients on laptops and meeting room hardware, and no date was given for mobile support. There are no settings or visible changes for users or administrators.
Google announced on its Workspace Updates blog on 12 October 2026 that Google Meet has started using post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to encrypt calls. The rollout began with web clients on laptops and with meeting room hardware. Google said mobile support is coming soon but did not give a date.
- Every Google Workspace customer gets the feature, as do Workspace Individual subscribers and people using personal Google accounts.
- A gradual rollout to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains started on 12 October; it can take up to 15 days to become visible.
- There is no admin control and no end-user setting; Google says users will not see any visible change.
- Quantum-safe encryption was already in place for Meet calls using client-side encryption (CSE); with this step PQC comes to other calls as well, starting with web and room hardware.
Why it matters
Google says the change addresses the theoretical risk that encrypted traffic recorded today could be decrypted later by a quantum computer, and stresses that no such computer exists today. For companies in Türkiye that hold meetings on Meet about finance, legal matters, research or tenders, where confidentiality has to last for years, this can be seen as an added layer of protection that needs no action. Since mobile support has not arrived yet, IT teams may want to check which devices are used for sensitive calls and update the encryption details in their security documentation.
