In short

According to a ShiftDelete.Net report dated 28 October 2026, Google Cloud said at Google Cloud Day Türkiye 2026 in İstanbul that the first year of its 2 billion dollar local cloud region investment is complete and that the Ankara data center is on schedule. It also announced a cloud and AI competency academy with the IT industry association TUBISAD.

ShiftDelete.Net reported on 28 October 2026 that Google Cloud shared an update on its investments at Google Cloud Day Türkiye 2026 in İstanbul, attended by more than 800 business executives and developers. The first year of the 2 billion dollar local cloud region project, spread over 10 years, is behind it, and according to company officials construction of the Ankara data center is on track. According to DonanimHaber, the project is run with Turkcell. Neither report gives a completion date.

  • Google Cloud said it is working with the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Cyber Security Presidency and the banking regulator BDDK to meet local rules.
  • The Türkiye Cloud and AI Competency Development Academy, set up with TUBISAD, is funded by a grant from Google Cloud's Economic and Social Development unit and targets more than 1,000 official Google Cloud certifications in its first 12 months.
  • The academy has three tracks: technical training for developers and systems engineers, AI literacy and governance for senior executives and public sector managers, and roadmaps for TUBISAD members to modernize infrastructure and grow software exports.
  • Under the AI Credit Program that Google Cloud runs with KOSGEB, domestic entrepreneurs can get support in the form of computing power, cloud storage and access to Gemini models.

Why it matters

Results shared by Turkish companies at the event give examples of where AI is being used inside businesses. According to the companies' own figures, Turkcell reported a 75 percent rise in development speed with Gemini-supported software processes, and Wingie Enuygun said voice AI agents answer 50 percent of its customer requests. A local cloud region could give companies that must keep data in the country a new option, but the reports do not say when the region will open. Such companies may want to keep an eye on the timeline.
